  9.  This document covers material and NEW features NOT contained in the user's
  10.  guide.  Please read ALL of this information carefully!
  11.  
  12.  We suggest that you print this file so you can have a hard copy for a 
  13.  reference as you setup Zip Manager. To print it you can use the windows
  14.  notepad Print command from the File Menu, or from the DOS prompt type
  15.  "copy readme.txt prn" without the quotes.  This will copy the file to
  16.  your default printer on LPT1.

  19.  The Zip Manager 4.0 ZIP (ZM4.ZIP) file is in PKZIP 1.10 format. Please
  20.  leave it in 1.10 ZIP format so users who don't have version 2.04 will be
  21.  able to extract it.  Thank You!

  24.  In order to setup and install Zip Manager Correctly you MUST follow the
  25.  steps outlined below.  Zip Manager 4.0 has so many powerful features it is 
  26.  critical that you take the time to set it up correctly before using it for 
  27.  the first time.
  28.  
  29.  PKZIP PKUNZIP VERSION 1.10 and 2.04 SUPPORT
  30.  ---------------------------------------------
  31.  Zip Manager supports both versions 1.10 and 2.04G.  It automatically
  32.  detects which version you are using each time the program starts.
  33.  
  34.  You Can Use PKZIP 1.10 AND PKUNZIP 2.04 AT THE SAME TIME if you need
  35.  to make 1.10 compatible Zip files and avoid errors when extracting
  36.  2.0 format Zip Files.
  37.  
  38.  The Zip Manager 4.0 Program Files
  39.  --------------------------------- 
  40.  The Zip Manager program files are in compressed format. You must run the
  41.  ZM4SETUP program to expand them before the program can be used.  The
  42.  setup program will create a Program Manager group and add the program
  43.  files and other important files to the group.   
  44.  
  45.  PLEASE NOTE:
  46.  ------------
  47.  You must run ZM4SETUP.EXE from the Windows Program Manager.  Other shells
  48.  like the Norton Desktop or PC Tools for Windows are not 100% compatible
  49.  with our setup program and may cause it to fail when attempting to create 
  50.  the Zip Manager 4.0 Group.
  51.  
  52.  Step 1
  53.  Running The ZM4SETUP Program
  54.  ----------------------------
  55.  After extracting the ZM4.ZIP file to either a directory on your hard drive
  56.  or to a floppy drive. Start Windows and make sure that the Windows 
  57.  Program Manager is running.
  58.  
  59.  1. From the Program Manager File Menu choose Run...
  60.  2. Enter the location of the ZM4SETUP Program. If the files were on your
  61.     A: drive then you would enter: A:\ZM4SETUP and press Enter or Click on 
  62.     the OK button.
  63.  3. The Zip Manager 4.0 setup dialog will be displayed.
  64.  4. The edit field will display a suggested directory.
  65.  5. Press OK to accept the default directory or enter new destination
  66.     directory and press Enter or Click on the OK button.
  67.  6. The setup program will create the directory for you and display
  68.     the file installation progress.
  69.  7. When it has finished expanding and copying the files it will create
  70.     a new Program Manager Group and add the program files to the group.
  71.     Now you can proceed with the next step.

  73.  Step 2
  74.  Copying The Archive Programs To
  75.  Your Zip Manager Directory
  76.  ----------------------------
  77.  You MUST copy PKZIP.EXE, and PKUNZIP.EXE from their current location on 
  78.  your drive into the Zip Manager directory.  The program will Not run unless 
  79.  it finds these files located in the same directory with the Zip Manager 
  80.  program files.  Any additional programs you plan to use must also be 
  81.  located in the Zip Manager directory.

  83.  For Complete Functionality the following files should be located in your
  84.  Zip Manager 4.0 directory:
  85.  PKZIP.EXE    ----> Required
  86.  PKUNZIP.EXE  ----> Required
  87.  ZIP2EXE.EXE  ----> Optional
  88.  PKZIPFIX.EXE ----> Optional
  89.  ARJ.EXE      ----> Optional - * Required if you want to use ARJ compression
  90.  Any other program like your Virus detection program and alternate archive
  91.  extraction programs such as LHARC, or ARC-E.

  93.  Step 3 
  94.  To Complete The Installation
  95.  ----------------------------
  96.  After the installation program is finished you MUST read the installation
  97.  section of the Users' Guide.  You will see its icon in the Zip Manager 4.0
  98.  group. You must setup the program's default directories, and configure
  99.  the program to work with your Virus Detection software.  In addition there
  100.  are several VERY IMPORTANT changes you need to make to your WIN.INI,
  101.  AUTOEXEC.BAT, and CONFIG.SYS files.

  104.                     Important Notes and New Features
  105.  *************************************************************************
  106.  
  107.  This version of Zip Manager has so many commands and options it is
  108.  imperative the your read the users manual BEFORE using the program.  At
  109.  least read the Drag and Drop Reference and The Using File Manager with
  110.  Zip Manager sections.  
  111.  
  112.  The documentation is in windows write format and it is the manual.wri file
  113.  that was installed with your program files.
  114.  
  115.  If you want to use Norton Desktop for Windows you MUST have Version 2.2 or 
  116.  later to  use it with Zip Manager. 
  117.  
  118.  Network and Single User Versions
  119.  --------------------------------
  120.  There are now single user and network specific versions of Zip Manager 4.0
  121.  The single user version does not support network file locking and share
  122.  violation warnings.  If you are using the Single User Version on a network
  123.  a dialog box will be displayed each time you start the program warning
  124.  you that this is NOT the network version.  The network version comes 
  125.  completely E-Mail Enabled and supports all E-Mail applications that use
  126.  and are compatible with the Microsoft MAPI standard.  We urge you to use the
  127.  network version if you ever archive a file or files on any drive other than 
  128.  your local drives!

  130.  Virus Detection Programs
  131.  ------------------------
  132.  Note:  In order for your virus detection program to work with Zip Manager
  133.  it MUST be able to accept command line arguments. Read the users guide
  134.  installation section for instructions on how to determine if your program
  135.  will work with Zip Manager.
  136.  
  137.  The following Virus Programs have been tested and ARE compatible with
  138.  Zip Manager:
  139.  SCAN.EXE ---> From McAfee Associates DOS Version.
  140.  VIRX.EXE ---> From Microcom Inc. DOS Version only.
  141.  Most other DOS based Anti Virus programs should be compatible.
  142.  
  143.  When using a DOS based Virus Detection Program you MUST enter the
  144.  full drive and path name of your program.  Optionally you can also
  145.  pass a switch to your virus program after the program name.
  146.   
  147.  The following programs ARE NOT compatible with Zip Manager:
  148.  Norton Anti Virus For Windows
  149.  PC Tools Anti Virus For Windows
  150.  PC Tools Anti Virus Included With DOS 6.0
  151.  WINRX The Windows version of VIRX from Microcom Inc.
  152.  
  153.  When using a Windows based Virus Detection Program you MUST enter the
  154.  full drive and path name of your program.  Optionally you can also
  155.  pass a switch to your virus program after the program name.
  156.  
  157.  New Hot Keys
  158.  Alt D and Alt W
  159.  -----------
  160.  In order to make it easier to quickly change directories we added an new 
  161.  accelerator key combination.  Now ALT + D will call the change directory 
  162.  dialog box.
  163.  
  164.  Pressing Alt + W will create a New Window, saving you the tedious steps of
  165.  choosing Window and then New from the Window menu.
  166.  
  167.  Size and Position Maintained Between Sessions
  168.  --------------------------------------------
  169.  Zip Manager will remember its last window size and position.  This includes
  170.  both maximized and minimized states.  This allows you to set Zip Manager
  171.  to a specific location and always have it start there.
  172.  
  173.  Known Video Card Problem
  174.  -------------------------
  175.  The Diamond Stealth VRAM Card has a bug in either its Windows Drivers on a
  176.  hardware related bug that causes the following problem.
  177.  
  178.  When attempting to run PKZIP in a DOS Window no text is visible.  The only
  179.  thing you will see is a flashing cursor.  All of the text is being displayed
  180.  black on black.  Zip Manager is still functioning normally and the archive
  181.  command will be completed successfully.
  182.  
  183.  No other hardware problems are known at the time of this release.
  184.  
  185.  Important Note On Converting Files!
  186.  ===================================
  187.  DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CONVERT MORE THAN ONE FILE AT A TIME. When converting
  188.  a file from ZIP to ARJ or ARC to ZIP for example, you would force the
  189.  conversion process to open up more than one copy of PKZIP.  This can easily
  190.  RESULT IN SEVERE DATA LOSS.  The Zip Manager was designed to convert only
  191.  one file at time, so please be careful.
  192.  
  193.  Maintenance Releases and Upgrades
  194.  ==================================
  195.  All maintenance and minor version upgrades will be available ONLY on our BBS. 
  196.  Since these releases will contain only the upgraded files it will save you
  197.  download time and keep the files on our board where they won't inadvertently
  198.  be downloaded as the complete program.  See the register.txt file for our BBS
  199.  numbers.
